On a breezy overcast evening at Ipswich Rugby Club, an enthusiastic group from Gotelee set out to capture the six a side touch rugby championship.
The squad comprised Andrew ‘Wheezer’ West, Laura ‘I SO Scored’ Read, Ollie ‘Speedster’ Ray, Mark ‘The Whippet’ White, Carmen ‘Compass’ King. We also had two ringers – Carmen’s daughter, Charlie ’Disaronno’ King, and Jack ‘the Quicker’ Rutherford. It’s fair to say that some had seen a rugby ball before, but not handled one for over a decade. Others had not come across an oblong ball at all, and had never played the game. There were four games (lasting 12 short, but punishingly painful minutes each) and our tally was: won one, lost three – one of which your reporter was assured was by a very narrow margin. In the face of some formidable opposition (with many teams having a majority of players from local rugby clubs) the squad did well, playing with enthusiasm and verve. By the end, there was some real flow and good communication between the players. No serious injuries other than aching limbs, slightly bruised ego and complete exhaustion. Sadly there were no prizes for the rugby. So as Solicitors in Ipswich we are really hot, but as a rugby side, let’s just say “a work in progress”.
All is not lost, though – we have 3 more sessions on 24th June, 1st and 8th July (7-9pm) – Wheezer and crew will be working on how to hone their skills, tactics and squad to an improved performance in the next round. Watch this space! Come on team Gotelee!!!
