Business disputes are inevitable, no matter the size of the organisation or the sector you operate in. Some of the time they are resolved informally, or people walk away and let a relationship break down.
But most of the time, the dispute has to be resolved. If mediation is not considered, litigation begins and costs are high in both financial and emotional terms. Dealing with the dispute can be hugely distracting, time consuming and ultimately, a judge makes the decision for you. It can be high risk, and very costly if you lose.
Mediation can be an effective solution to nip these kind of issues in the bud and avoid taking them to court or Employment Tribunal, causing minimal disruption to your business and its operations.
Mediation is carried out with the parties in separate rooms. The mediator will act impartially and will visit each room to understand the issue and underlying needs of each of the parties, and will facilitate the parties to help them to reach an agreement.
What are the benefits of mediation?
Mediation allows parties to regain control of the outcome in their dispute. It is a quick, cost effective way of resolving disputes, saving time, money and stress. Mediation is completely confidential and can be used to resolve a dispute at any stage.
With a high success rate, most disputes are resolved within a day unlike Court or tribunal cases which can take months or sometimes years to reach a conclusion.
The cost of mediation is much less than that of taking a dispute to Court or an Employment Tribunal.

Andrew West qualified as a solicitor in 1996, and has worked in Suffolk since 2002. Andrew is head of Gotelee’s Employment team and has a vast amount of experience in employment and work related disputes, as well as extensive experience in commercial disputes and their resolution.
