Mediation for the workplace

Unfortunately, disputes in the workplace are inevitable along with their impact on productivity and morale. Left unresolved, they can lead to grievances and Employment Tribunal claims. Managing a breakdown in working relationships effectively can reduce employee disruption, minimise the risk of defending a tribunal claim and reduce the unnecessary cost of diverted management time. It can also salvage the working relationship and lower your recruitment costs and the other risks associated with staff leaving.

Workplace mediation offers an informal, structured process in which an independent mediator helps individuals and teams in a disagreement or dispute create a way forward. Workplace mediation focuses on the future and allows the parties to move away from historical issues, towards a healthy working relationship with mutually agreed practical solutions to the issues they faced. It is cost effective, and frequently successful – because so many of the issues revolve around poor communication, and mediation allows parties to be heard and to look at the situation with more perspective. Mediation can work at any stage of a workplace dispute – but as with most things, the earlier you engage in a proactive process like mediation, the better the chances of a successful outcome.
