The number of divorces has risen for the first time this decade – with men increasingly the ones seeking formal separation.
The divorce rate per 1,000 married people is now 8.9 – an increase of 4.7%. It is the first time divorces have increased since 2009/10.
The average length of a marriage is now 12 years – the longest since 1972, with the most common reason for divorce being “unreasonable behaviour”, with 51% of women and 36% of men citing it in their divorce petitions.
So what’s behind the increase?
According to relationship support charity Relate, money worries are one of the top strains on relationships and it may be that rising levels of household debt and stagnating pay growth could be contributing factors.
However, the trend in recent years has seen divorces falling – despite the pressures of the economic downturn and turbulent jobs market.
