National Stress Awareness Day
National stress awareness day is a countrywide campaign to highlight the impact that stress has on individuals and the various steps that can be taken to avoid it.
Stress can manifest itself in a number of different ways and may not always have an identifiable cause or trigger; however one of most consistent causes of stress in the UK is work. The HSE reports that over 0.5m workers across the UK are suffering from work-related stress, anxiety or depression, Furthermore, 11.7m working days are lost each year as a result. Stress makes up 37% of all work-related ill health incidents and accounts for 45% of all working days lost due to ill health. The combined effect of this is an annual cost of £5.2 billion to the economy each year.
Causes of workplace stress can include tight deadlines, too much pressure, too much responsibility, or lack of support / protection from managerial staff.
When employers fail to acknowledge workplace stress and take appropriate action, it can have a significant impact on the employee’s wellbeing and their livelihood. Often employees can feel forced to leave their job or they may develop further psychiatric problems as a result of the ongoing stress.
