An initiative which supports more than 450 young people in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas has been boosted thanks to the support of Gotelee Solicitors.
The Porch Project was launched in 2009 and engages with local youngsters between the ages of 11 and 20 years, helping to nurture their physical, mental, social and educational well-being through activities, learning programmes, school visits and street work.
The charity, which recently relocated to a new permanent location in Hadleigh High Street, needs to raise £100,000 annually to continue to its work.
Leading Suffolk law firm Gotelee, which has an office in Hadleigh, has agreed to make a grant of £3,000 per annum for three years – money that is being used to support the funding of a full-time female youth worker to cater for the specific needs of young women involved in the project.
This includes the launch of a programme called Strive, which encourages girls to take ownership of the group and plan sessions, helping them to develop self-esteem and confidence, as well as improving their interpersonal skills. The aim is to offer a different type of approach – to listen, support, encourage and direct local young people who perhaps lack the proper role models to prepare them for a fulfilling life.
Judith Hermite, Porch Project Treasurer, said: ‘The Porch Project is an independent charity no. 1143203 engaging, through a range of services, with young people between the ages of 11 and 19 in Hadleigh, Great Cornard and surrounding areas.
The Project has no regular income, depending on donations from local individuals, clubs and businesses plus grants. We are very grateful to Gotelee Solicitors for donating £3,000 p.a. (2017 to 2019) to support, in part, the salary of a female youth worker. We need to be able to employ and retain good youth workers so having the support of a local business with a three-year commitment is very important to us.’
Charles Rowett, CEO of Gotelee, said the firm was delighted to support the Porch Project.
“The project is a brilliant cause, helping young people in and around Hadleigh to make the right choices as they move from childhood into adulthood.
“Gotelee’s commitment to Suffolk goes beyond providing a legal service for people and businesses in the county. We believe in supporting the local community groups and charities that really make a difference to people’s lives – and the Porch Project certainly fits the bill.”
Gotelee’s Hadleigh office is located at 6 Church Street and provides clients with a full range of legal services. To find out more, visit www.gotelee.co.uk or drop in to the office.
