Sickness absence advice – individuals

Sickness absence can take many different forms. Your rights, and what your employer should do, differ depending on the nature of your illness, for example:

  • Recurrent short-term absences.
  • Long-term absence.
  • Disability-related absence.
  • Maternity-related sickness absence.
  • Absence caused by your employer’s or your colleagues conduct (for example, stress caused by overwork, bullying or harassment)

No-one likes being ill or unable to work.  If your absence is likely to be lengthy, or if you are unable to carry out your work because of an injury or disability, then your employer may think about whether the employment relationship can continue.
