Making a Will

Making a Will

It is never too early to be thinking of making a Will and to ensure that your assets and estate go to the people you want them to. If you don’t, that may not happen. Planning for the future is not complete without making a Will and it is something you may need to re-visit many times during your life.

Making a Will is advisable for everyone, even if you feel you don’t have much to leave.

It is a vitally important document that can deal with:

  • Arranging gifts to friends, charities and family
  • Preparing for the future by appointing guardians or trusts for young children, grandchildren and vulnerable beneficiaries etc
  • Ensuring you are taking full advantage of tax exemptions, allowances and reliefs
  • Succession planning for business owners

Once the Will is finalised we will be happy to hold it indefinitely in our secure storage at no charge. In making a Will, sooner rather than later, you will give not only yourself but also those you care about peace of mind. Making a Will is the only way of making sure all your wishes are carried out just the way you want.

Our Fees

Standard Wills – We would normally expect to charge £350 plus VAT for a relatively straightforward Will and £475 plus VAT for mirror Wills ie. two Wills containing similar provisions eg. husband and wife leaving everything to each other and then ultimately their children.

Family Protection Wills – we would normally expect to charge £650 plus VAT for Family Protection Wills ie. two Wills containing similar provisions and providing some asset protection from future care home fees etc.

More Complex Wills – Some Wills are more complex than others and hence take more time to deal with and we reserve the right to bill for these Wills based on an hourly charging rate, which ranges between £145 to £295 plus VAT per hour. We also reserve the right to charge an hourly charging rate when providing Inheritance Tax advice.

If it is necessary to prepare a Notice of Severance to amend the way your home is owned we would normally expect to charge £75 plus VAT for each property.

Gotelee as Executors
There is no extra charge if you choose the partners of Gotelee Solicitors to be appointed as the executors and, unlike other firms, we do not charge for being the executors of your Will during the administration process. Our costs remain based on a time basis so we charge at an appropriate hourly rate for the work we are required to do in connection with the administration. Our scale of charges is exactly the same when we are instructed to act by lay executors or when the partners of this firm are appointed. The scale of charges will be the rate relevant at the date of your death and the appropriate client care information will be supplied to your lay executors and/or residuary beneficiaries.

Please note that once we have produced a draft will for you, if you fail to proceed to execute the same, despite a reminder that the matter remains outstanding, we will submit an invoice for the work carried out. Remember that all details of our fees and disbursements will be given to you, as well as our terms and conditions, prior to the commencement of any work on your behalf. Gotelee is very proud of the Price Promise which means no surprises.
