Immediate steps following the death of a friend or relative

Help what do I do? The death of a friend or relative can be a hugely difficult time, although we hope that these steps can help you ensure that the appropriate arrangements are made with any extra trauma.

  • Contact the Register Office to register the death – details to take with you
    • Deceased’s full name and any previous names
    • Date and place of birth
    • Deceased’s marital status and details of spouse or civil partner
    • Deceased’s usual address
    • National Insurance number
    • Medical Certificate from the Hospital, GP or Coroner
  • Begin Funeral Arrangements
  • Find the Will
  • Contact Friends and Employer
  • Contact Pension Service or Benefits agency
  • Contact a lawyer at Gotelee, we who will be able to guide you through the next steps of contacting the financial institutions, insurance and utility companies and will be able to advise as to whether a grant of probate or letters of administration will be required.   We offer a fixed fee one hour meeting and can help with all matters following the death of a friend or relative and can point you in the right direction as to what needs to happen next
