HSE Launches new campaign to highlight the dangers of Asbestos
The HSE have launched a new campaign “Asbestos your Duty” which aims to improve peoples understanding of what the legal duty to manage asbestos involves especially in relation to buildings.
Although asbestos was banned from construction 25 years ago it was widely used in the construction industry especially between 1950 and 1980. Many of the buildings that we use in our daily lives such as offices, schools and public buildings have asbestos within their fabric. Generally this is safe for people visiting the buildings if it is properly managed and contained. However it can become dangerous when disturbed or damaged.
HSE has updated information on its website as well as videos with guidance and new templates for asbestos management plans available to all who need to learn of their responsibilities.
Sarah Albon, HSE’s chief executive said: “To keep people safe from the harms of asbestos, a culture of safely managing asbestos is needed in our building industry and among those responsible for buildings.
“Asbestos exposure in Great Britain is still the single greatest cause of work-related deaths due to exposures decades ago.
“Together, we must protect people in the workplace and reduce future work-related ill health.”
