Discrimination can take several forms:
Direct discrimination – if you are treated less favourably because of one of the characteristics in the list above. An obvious example would be refusing to recruit a suitable candidate because they were pregnant.
Indirect discrimination – when an employer requires all employees to work in a particular way, but which disadvantages you because of your circumstances. For example, requiring all employees to work full-time hours, which those with childcare responsibilities may struggle to manage.
Disability discrimination – if you are disabled and your employer fails to must make reasonable adjustments to help you at work.
Harassment – if you are treated in a way which you find upsetting or offensive, or which makes your work environment unpleasant. An example would be an insensitive and hurtful ageist comment.
Victimisation – if you’ve complained or intended to complain about discrimination, or if you’ve given evidence or helped someone to complain about discrimination and are then disadvantaged. For example, if you were turned down for promotion because you had assisted an employee as their representative at a grievance hearing.
